That's what he says, yes. I see no reason not to believe Typhon but then 
if he is telepathic that might change things. Of course he is no Mule ....

Presumably he would have shown himself only to his troops, i.e., those 
he directly commanded, who would have seen his face (he thinks) and 
ignored Piaton's. Those would command others etc., so the people might 
never know.
