I didn't mean to misrepresent your theory about neighbour-hybridisation, I was just mentioning ot in passing.  I think James's theory could be described as a cross between possession and a sort of psychic hybridisation.  But I must re-read the books anyway before I get too deep into the mystery of who exactly Silk/Horn is at any time, though I lean to the belief that he is all human.

With regard to the star, the main point is that - at least according to Silk/Horn - you can see it as a dim red point in the  night sky of Blue.  Therefore (if he is telling the truth) it is not the sun of Green and Blue, but a far distant star.

The bits you have capitalised require no special explanation:

- Urth is certainly ancient 

- Jugano has already been to Nessus, and they have already travelled down the Gyoll on the river boat to see monster Scylla. They are going back again to find human Scylla's grave.

        Gerry, I am only going to include the parts of the quote I find especially interesting.  Yes, it is far away,  But is that distance in time?  Why is this whorl called ancient, and this city old?  Sure it is far away, but I think that is not necessarily evidence that he can really see it in anything but his mind, but yes, you are right, I can't find a mechanism that satisfactorily explains why they would arrive at that particular time.  I don't think the neighbors possess horn at all.  I think they hybridize with him to make Neighbor Horn.
