Yes me too. Hopefully there are some callbacks to the most inexplicable
parts of A Borrowed Man. They spend ten pages thinking about how Conrad Sr
got his money and then Ern is like, maybe I’ll come back to that, or maybe
I won’t. Definitely the most frustrating part of Wolfe’s late work is
trying to determine what can be discerned and what is outside the realm of
interpolation. The manner in which Ern deduces the true identity of his out
of work cop friend is one of the most unbelievable things Wolfe ever out to
paper - are we supposed to believe it?
