I should point out that there's nothing specifically insectoid or even 
invertebrate about larvae. Individuals are said to be a 'larva' if they are 
significantly different from their adult stage, other than being simply a 
miniature. It's the default condition; only a few groups have evolved to 
have their newborn be miniatures of the adults (and yes, among those groups 
is the one comprising reptiles/birds/mammals).

It may be relevant that latin _larva_ means something like 
wraith/shade/(scary mask).
