I suspect the truth (slippery thing that it is) lies somewhere in
between. Wolfe has a definite primary meaning in mind, in which the
meanings of Silent and Silver are as given in the book; but he has the
tale of Dionysus in the back of his mind and is, if not riffing hard,
at least playing on it. For all his seriousness, Wolfe is a very
playful writer.
