Anybody else read Earth Abides (1949) by George R Stewart?

The protagonist, Ish, spends about the second half of the book 
struggling with the moral issues of becoming a god to the other 
survivors of a global apocalypse. Couldn't help but be reminded of 
Severian's apotheosis.
