Sorry I'm a little late to this part of the discussion.
If "Silver" refers to "Silvanus" then this might be one of Wolfe's
etymological jokes: "argentum" is silver while "ager" is "field,
wild." While Silvanus is "god of the woods" he is also a god of
agriculture, like Aristaeus. Argeus (or Agreus) is also an aspect of Pan.
Then there's Argentina ("silver" or "shining" place) -- hello Borges,
Nessus.
Phanes is "the shining one" or "argent."
Dionysus/Phanes is in every book Wolfe has written.
