  No, my characters are not like me. I can only imagine what I would be like as a literary character.  A bookish, somewhat awkward lawyer with a penchant for self-deprecation and sarcasm?  Heaven save us from such characters.
Replace 'lawyer' with 'academic', 'writer' or 'publisher', and you have described the hero of 50% of comedic literary fiction.
