As the theater troupe passes thorugh the wall, they meet Jonah
who offers to join their conversation and enlighten them further
about the Wall. He tells a story about how Urth's ancient rulers
feared nothing but their own people. The story then goes on to
describe a woman who brought an interstellar handful of black
beans which she threatens to throw into the ocean and thus destroy
the world.

The story would seem to continue but is interupted by the "affair
at the gate" which ends the first book. But what we are given might seem
to imply the wall was built in response to the threat which figuratively
grew from alien black beans thrown in the ocean, i.e. the megatherians.

If the Ascians are the Abaia-inspired threat from the north, the
pale warriors of Erebus would be the likely threat from the south,
necessitating complete enclosure.
