I could have sworn that that's from Ulysses, and it's Bloom thinking it.
Bloom thinks a lot of things about Catholicism that are factually wrong (for
example, he also contemplates the "fact" that nuns invented barbed wire,
which is of course false.)  In fact when I first read the book I felt that
Joyce was working in anti-Catholic propaganda that he either knew or ought
to know was false--upon rereading I felt that he was parodying it and
emphasizing Bloom's status as a cultural outsider.  (Not that Joyce isn't
criticizing the Church--he is, but he's far too smart to need to resort to
telling lies.)
