Roy states that the last castellan had died generations ago, and further asserts that if the castellan can be related to Valeria then indeed nothing in the book means anything.
 
Unfortunately while nothing can be proven, Valeria's presence in a building that thwarts time in a book that involves time travel makes generations somewhat more moot than they would be in, say, War and Peace, and also makes these kind of statements much more ambiguous and open to interpretation than they would be in works of absolute realism, which is why it is so hard to pin down precisely which lines are literal and which are distorted by the capricious trans-temporal nature of the text.
 
in other words, the words can be true and not true at the same time due to the nature of time and generations in the text, though I will not necessarily say I support the relationship of the "current" castellan with Valeria.
