Reis had a lot of enemies, including the F.B.I., the A.T.F., and Cthulhu
cultists. He would be sensible to take any number of precautions when
going to a public place where someone might expect him to be (if India
talked, for example). He attended all his son's football games invisibly
(p. 277).

Why disguise himself when he's already invisible? It seems cameras can
defeat glamours (the photo of Gib showed him as he really was) and maybe
invisibility too, since it works on the same principle. That gives
another possible explanation for John's thick glasses. They could
conceal a camera and video feed, so he could have "true sight." Chase
might have been telling John that the Woldercans could do the same thing
without being so obvious, with their superior science of optics.

That's a plausible alternative. Still, Wolfe goes out of his way to
mention the yellow feathers in the headdress later, so I tend to think
this is a clue.

So maybe Vince is a clone or temporal double of Reis, using a glamour to
appear different? That could be it. And if so that makes Norma Peiper
the real ex-wife of Reis or his equivalent, just as I suspected. "I used
to be married to the volcano god." (p. 176)
