I think it might be drawn from the point where Typhon / Paiton is stroking (himself? itself?) after being awoken by Severian. If memory serves, it was when they were overlooking the land far below the statue. I remember reading here on the Urth list that one theory was that Typhon was going to rape Severian, and that Paiton resisted.<br>

Not that I don't think he is---note the double-penised depiction of Pas on the obscene tapestry, which seems to suggest a dual sexual nature that some perceived as his primary feature. Note also the demand for a tribute of boys and girls by the tyrant of the tale of the Student. But is that evidence or conjecture?<br>
