Now explain to me the zombie scene.  

I suspect that Wolfe has not, at this point, decided to write a fantasy novel instead of a science fiction novel.  That is, he hasn't decided (out of the blue) to include a zombie story for the fun of it, with real zombies, and then go back to the main story that he's telling.  The zombie story has to be very closely connected with the rest of the novel.

Of course, all these people are zombies, aren't they?  They're dead, but their memories have been placed in other people, so that they're still alive in some sense.  They're the living dead.
