I enjoyed it too.  But all I meant was that like _The City And The City_ it 
is an earlier example of a fictional, seemingly Balkan country, albeit from 
a modern literary era.

Of course, thinking back further there were the Ruritania stories (Prisoner 
of Zenda etc.).  Though that had a more Austro-Hungarian feel, I think.
