But it can work. There are commensal worms, and mutualistic worms.
They may not be as famous as the partnership between nitrogen-fixing
bacteria and plant roots, but they exist. We all know of earthworms,
and in a broader sense, worms can help the plant ecosystem by breaking
down things (eg. borers and dead wood).
