(urth) Claw = Fang?

Thorns might be considered to resemble claws more than fangs. But 
Severian's blood the Claw sheds is perhaps more important than the Claw 
itself.

It seems like a stretch, but "nature red in tooth and claw" could 
connect it to a fang. But why do so?
