IIRC, I think his hunger gets no relief until he finds some corn in an
abandoned shepherd's bothy. He leaves the Pelerine scarf as an attempt
at repayment. This scene is rarely discussed but might have a lot of meaning.
Anyway, so the water Severian drinks is melted snow and he never accepts the
satanicly offered food. Surely there is some significance to that. The story
may be about something greater than the battle between good and evil but
when offered a choice, Severian seems most often to choose good.
