Just a quick thought.  Has anyone ever considered that the ring may be
what allowed Horns resurrection in the pit?  This may be what was held
to Horns forehead.  IIRC there is a moment where a character looks
inside the ring and sees a Neighbor.  Maybe its this Neighbor that
leaves the ring and possesses Horn?  The color change could reflect an
activation of sorts.  Or a deactivation depending on how you look at
it.
