The text is clear their memories were "altered" before being placed in the sleep... but I agree with you,
you would expect a clone of the monarch to be somewhat recognizable.

Something just occurred to me this morning. Mamelta and Rigoglio (as well as chems, but they mightn’t know or notice) are not the only people who were contemporaneous with Typhon. All the Sleepers were, and there must have been hundreds if not thousands in the cities SilkHorn travelled through.
Typhon made a big point of the fact that peoples’ recognition of his face was a vital part of his rule (and his family walked through peoples’ dreams).
So how could Silk be a clone of Typhon without it being talked about?
