Erm... how about the one quoted by Wolfe?

Venus fits well enough here, and since the Hunter of the East is the Sun, the stone must be something else.

Of course, the stone may not be intended to be visible.  After all, if you throw a stone into a pool that reflects stars, the stars will vanish but so will the stone (as will the White Fountain, incidentally, when it annihilates the black hole at the heart of the sun).  So the stone need not necessarily be any celestial body as such – it could be that the important thing is that a stone has been flung.
