NOT A PARODY.  Does Wolfe mock his faith?  It is a living out of the symbolic connotation, and the way that man will achieve life even after he has died as a race, living on as vegetable matter conjoined with animal matter.  It is the lianas and trees both who are driven to higher things in this enactment of the eucharist.  This is watched by the vanished gods, this is the mysterious symbol at work in the text.
