Actually, I've been reading the 1897 serialized novel, _Edison's
Conquest of Mars_

Besides electrical spaceships, Thomas Edison also invents radiation
guns that 'vibrate' at frequencies which dissociate atoms -
disintegrators. Seem like death-ray guns to me!
