This was often the case. Many people were defamed after the start of the 
Korean War. On the other hand, anyone who stayed in the CPU after the 
Molotov--Ribbentrop Pact could not be labeled a "premature 
anti-communist". Pete Seeger, Dalton Trumbo, and Dashiell Hammet opposed 
American support of the Allies BECAUSE Hitler had cut a deal with 
Stalin. Then they turned on a dime after Hitler's sneak-attack.

In the late 30s Trumbo bragged about squelching screenplays that painted 
the USSR in a bad light.

It's hard to find heroes among humanity.
