One interpretation of the Urth/Whorl universe is that a ladder stretches from us to the Increate, with an "angel" of increasing purity on every rung.

Another is that a ladder stretches downward to the lowest sentient prey/host (us), with a predator (wolf?) on every rung.

It's all in your point of view. Or how you spell "pray."

Either way, the universe is a dangerous place, where sentient beings are only as [in]humane to us as we are to one another. "Man Is Wolf To Man," as the title of the autobiography of an WW2 Eastern Front survivor has it.
