Most of the safety infrastructure might be internal. Suppose there are
pressure sensors and airtight seals dispersed throught the maze of tunnels
under the surface of the asteroid. If a leak is detected, seals in the
region surrounding it will clamp down, and the Crew can then investigate at
their leisure (how do you fix an asteroid anyway? - they'd probably just
leave things as they are).
They would have been more concerned about collisions than alien invaders.
The Neighbours probably just landed on the surface, built an airtight
chamber, and drilled down from there until they hit a tunnel.. Or they may
have cut their way into a lander or other surface infrastructure, which
didn't report anything amiss because its monitor's cards had been repurposed
by the Cargo.
One does wonder why the Crew were not more concerned or knowledgeable with
regard to the Green-Blue system - after all, one would have expected them to
send exploration vessels to Green and Blue soon after arrival. Probably the
conflict between the Gods inhibited them from performing such actions, and
after Pas was killed any external activity or exploration would have been
prohibited by Echidna.
