Depends on who's doing the thinking.

Aquinas, for example, somewhat-following Aristotle, believed that
souls came in three varieties:

The _vegetable_ soul, which gives life and the power of growth and reproduction.
The _animal_ soul, which gives the power of movement.
And the _rational_ soul, which gives the power of, well, reason.

In Aquinas' schema, only humans have all three souls -- angels do not
have the first two but are pure rational soul.
