Probably not, but their alien nature may be a plus in that they are not
recognized as foreign matter. If they are something like animated sheets
of graphite, a human body's innards would only gradually antagonize
them, like a tattoo that takes years to fade. A canny victim might
escape smothering by gashing their arm and covering their nose and
mouth, so that the notules enter the wound as the hottest exposed flesh.
If the notules heal, grow, and/or reproduce by adding carbon from
living compounds to their graphite sheet, you'd have a tattoo that would
actually darken as time went by, and one hell of a story to go with it.
