As is mentioned by others the Orthodox liturgy explicitly uses a knife. It is ritually inserted prior to a formal cutting motion being made. Since Wolfe has mentioned that the state is based on a Byzantine pattern this could indicate a eucharistic ceremony. That being said I haven't read the books about the whorl so I can't comment further.
