In fact, if one wants to take the fact that Wolfe modeled the Commonwealth on Byzantium (with the Korean War thrown in for local color) to its logical conclusion, the period before the Autarchs would necessarily be characterized by paganism, animal sacrifice, and a state religion centered on the ruler.

BTW, while it is true that there is no evidence in the Urth Cycle that
Typhon and his family had been worshipped back on Urth, neither is there
any evidence that Catholicism or some approximation thereof had been
practiced in Typhon's time.
