Regarding the "Names and the Whorl" thread. I'm pretty sure someone else has noted this, except, perhaps, for the Smoothbone and trumpet parts:
Horn is a papermaker who writes a book about Silk 'trumpeting' his achievements (horn as megaphone). Hide can be made into parchment (admittedly a paper substitute, but a still a support for writing), and horn, hide, and hoof can all be boiled into glue. The glue can be combined with pigment to make ink. Smoothbone sounds kind of like a pen handle.
