Green has an interesting explanation of how this works in  There Are 
Doors. The various dimensions of There Are Doors with some worlds 
"closer" to each other than others are (like strings on a guitar), is 
indistinguishable from tBotNS's succession of universes, at least from 
Green and Sev's POV.
