My vague interpretation of that scene is that it relates
to the secret world of khaibits. My theory is that a
khaibit's name is derived from the name of her clone
mistress, but that it is quite impolite to discuss the
relationship openly. Hence, Pega was cloned from mistress
Pelagia and she debates with Odilo whether it is proper to
call her role with her mistress as soubrette or ancilla,
"khaibit" being too crass to mention.
Perhaps this explains the mysterious "half-sister"
relationship between Thecla and Thea? (though Thea is not
shorter nor subordinate). But if there is a khaibit cloned
from Thea, her name is too short to derive a new (saint)
name. So perhaps Thea's khaibit was named just that-
"Thea's" (Thais).
