I've never given it much thought. The names in Viron's religion seem  
Greek so I just assumed patera and maytera were to be understood as  
such - the Greek for father is stressed on the er and patera would be  
a way to suggest that stress. Istr that somewhere in the text someone  
says that those terms are meant to show respect though the adresssed  
isn't the biological father or mother of the addressing one.

I say Viron's religion because it isn't at all clear to me that the  
other cities in the Whorl follow similar ideas, e even if they draw  
from the same source.
