I didn't think it was necessary for them to become mortal to partake of
the plenary indulgence, but it would have been kind of futile trying to
stop transcendent spirits. And there never was an explanation of why
Loki and Bartleby wanted to go back to Heaven without repenting - I
suppose that Jesus did not die to save fallen angels from sin.

While we are on the subject of movies about the more ineffable Christian
spirituality, I recommend netflixing _The Rapture_. As far as I know, it's
the only R-rated biblical epic and is one of the few treatments of
theodicy that can be considered even-handed without being (too) ambiguous
or noncommittal.
