What's the point in creating a parallel universe that is fundamentally identical to our own?

I don't think it matters. 
Earth is in the future or past of this creation, or even perhaps in a previous or suceeding instance of this cyclical repeating universe.  Meaning, our Eath is subject to the same cosmic realities as Urth. These realities take different names, such as Jesus or the Outsider, but they are the same underlying reality. If there is a Logos that stands beyond our realm, there is a logos outside Severian and Silk's realm. It's really not that confusing.
