If you had read what Thomas wrote, there's quite a bit there about 
characters dreamtraveling according to connections within their minds, 
e.g. wishing to go to Green while in the company of the Duko took the 
Rajan to Urth instead of Green because putting together the Rajan and 
the Duko there is a mental connection between Green and Urth. 'Mental 
maps' refers to the characters, not to Wolfe. The bookshelf stuff came 
as an aside, but not necessarily a silly one.
