In Chapter XXIII, I believe it is plain that Alpheta's face is there 
because she's standing on just the other side of the portal through 
which Sev and Gunnie have just plunged; why it lingers on for as long as 
it does, perhaps she is supervising his safe return to The Ship, and it 
is not a given, even though Tzadkiel has seen him return?

In Chapter XLVIII, that is a toughie. It is not just a fleeting glimpse 
like one might expect of an absent but expected or remembered person, 
but seems to linger for a time...possibly another portal opened to watch 
over him?
