(urth) Bax as the Compiler and a question

Just a note that if Bax was the compiler, his degree in 19th century lit might make it perfectly appropriate for him to write an epistolary novel. More were certainly written in the 18th century, but a rather prominent one about a vampire was written in 1897.
But a question: he mentions that he was working on a 3rd Ph.D. when his aunt's money ran out. Do we know what he was studying or have any hints? Folklore? The occult?
