Oh, Moby-Dick is hilarious! I wouldn't have laughed at it 20 years ago, but now I see it. The characters are over the top, and the long didactic sections---since we're talking about Wolfe's occasional lectures--are very funny.

_Moby-Dick_ works like that too. The scene with Baldanders at the inn
is, of course, a direct homage.
Also, if you're looking at me in confusion, yes, _Moby-Dick_ is
funny. Often really, really funny. I recommend it.
