 From the Greek chrysos, gold. Although it may also be a play on the 
English root chris-, meaning to do with anointment, from the Greek 
chrisai (to anoint) which also of course gives Christos. I don't have 
enough Greek to know whether the two roots are related in that 
language or if it's just a coincidence.
