Cordwainer Smith's solar sails spring to mind.  In the framing story of "The 
Lady who sailed The Soul" there is a casual note that at one time the sails 
of one interstellar ship accidentally shaded the whole Earth. 

Mr Wolfe, are you **sure** you never read Cordwainer Smith???
