I took that to be the "real" volcano god, assuming Vince's form 
because that was how Cassie was accustomed to seeing the god in the 
show. (Alternatively, Vince's show costume was an extremely accurate 
portrayal of the god's natural appearance.) On p286 Cassie realizes 
"You're not really Vince, are you? You just look like him."

Admittedly, we've had no real cause to believe up till then that 
there is a "real" volcano god; but given Cassie's experience with the 
shark god, there sems no reason to doubt it either. Of course, in 
both cases no-one else witnesses the apparition.
