No, they are as believable as an unspecified number of these back to back.

However I do believe that the mountains exist.  I also believe that the cliff face that Severian is not created by geographical forces but by human activity which may be
deliberate (http://www.wipo.int/pctdb/en/wo.jsp?WO=2007113002&IA=EP2007002964&DISPLAY=DESC) or incidental (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fresh_Kills_Landfill).

So, the argument here is not about whether the mountains exist but whether the forces that created the mountains and cooled the Earth's core were natural or not.
