Well, my Theory Of Stupid Onomastics ("Appian->Vera/Verus->Severian")
relies on (b). The Appian Way takes us to Rome, of course. Or to
Brindisi if we're walking in the other direction. Neither of which
have anything, alas, to do with the New Sun.
