I suspect that this is going to vary with location but for English English 
speakers I'd have thought the word if not commonplace at least not 
particularly rare.
A number of cities other than London have areas and institutions named 
Barbican because of a historic link with such a structure, Plymouth, 
Gloucester and York immediately come to mind.
